    Ingredients

YOU WILL NEED:

4 tbsp butter
1 1/4 cup milk
4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp instant yeast
Pinch of sugar

For the egg wash
1 egg yolk
1 tsp milk

LET'S START:

  • swiss braid

Prepare.
Prepare parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Melt the butter, then add the milk and heat it till you have a lukewarm butter/milk mixture.

SECOND:

  • swiss braid

Mix it.
Put the flour, salt, yeast, sugar in a large mixing bowl.
Add the lukewarm butter/milk mixture.

Start to mix using wood spoons.
When it's to hard to mix it anymore put the dough onto slightly floured surface.
Knead the dough with your hands for 15-20 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic.
Do not add any flour. Dough will come together.

THIRD:

Let it rise.
Shape the dough into a ball.
Put back into the mixing bowl and cover it with plastic wrap.
Let dough rise for 1 1/2 hours or double in size in a warm, drafted-free area.

FORTH:

  • swiss braid

Make the braid.

Preheat the oven 350°F.

1. Divide dough into 3 equal pieces.
2. Roll each to 16 inches long rolls.
3. Braid them.

Egg wash:
Beat egg yolk and milk with a fork.
Bush the braid with the egg wash.

Bake it!

Bake your swiss braid.
Bake your swiss braid for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.
Let it cool on rack.

EAT IT.

  • swiss braid

Eat it with butter, jam or cheese right away.
You can keep the swiss braid for few days or slice swiss braid and freeze slices.
